It Doesn’t Resonate Until It Does

As we drove along my two oldest daughters were reading, the two youngest girls were bantering about their dolls, my boy was giving commentary on the cows in the field we were passing, and my wife and I were having a conversation. Somehow I had a thought about marketing in the middle of all that.

You’ve likely heard that people need to be exposed to a message seven or more times before they pay attention. Well, if you didn’t think that was enough I recently heart that number may be up to over 15 exposures to your message.

As the above example of my family driving demonstrates weveryone has their own thoughts going through their heads.

Has anyone ever recommended a product, service, or book and you just blew it off even though that person was excited about it? Sure, I think all of us have had that experience. Take the book for example. You heard about a book a few times over several years but never looked at it. Then one day the book comes to your attention again and you begin reading. “Wow, this is good!” you tell yourself.

The question you now ask is, “Why didn’t I read this before?” Because it didn’t resonate with you previously. Now you are ready for it. Now it resonates with you.

This is why you need to keep telling your story and letting people know what you offer. Just because they aren’t interested today doesn’t mean they won’t be two years from now. Everyone is dealing with what is happing in their life right now. We’re busy people and there is so much coming at us every day that we filter most of it out. But for the right people at the right time, your message can resonate with them.

Get clear on your message. Tell people what you do, how you do it and how their life will be better for having worked with you. When they’re ready they’ll respond.
